Week at a Glance

HUMS
-Propaganda Posters were due today and EVERYONE in both classes handed them in! Way to go!!
-We have had many periods this week to be working on our CPR Mini-Essay and we will have work periods every day next week as well. This is currently scheduled to be due Thursday, April 18th. Students are allowed to work on this over the weekend if they would like.
-Please check out the HUMS page on this blog for access to instructions, the class-created rubric, and the drafting/editing/revising process. Editing and revising checklists have been made available in class and editing marks have been handed out and glued into black duotangs.
-We will be continuing to work on our Canadian Tall Tales next week so be aware that not every period will be a work period for the CPR essay.
-There will be a quiz on Confederation, NWMP, CPR, and Western Immigration on Thursday, April 25th.  Students are allowed to bring in all of their Questions to Know sheets (where they have taken notes on these topics) to the quiz as well as their web/list on how the CPR changed Canada. If students have additional notes they would like to bring in that they took in class, they need to check them with Mrs. Croswell prior to the quiz date.
-*Sum-up page marks for Confederation and NWMP are now available in PowerSchool* If you do not see a mark it is because you have not handed in your assignment or have only handed in one out of two sum-up pages.

MATH
-We continue to work on our understanding of fractions and equivalent fractions.
-This week we have really focused on looking at what fractions are worth more or less.
-A good strategy for working on this is to come up with a series of fractions and then try to put them on a number line. We did this with a variety of fractions and included some that we could use as benchmarks (1/4, 1/2, 3/4 etc)
-We will be continuing to work on these in the coming week as well as exploring mixed numbers and improper fractions.

SCIENCE
-We continue to explore electricity.
-We have talked about the strength and power of the 120V that can come out of the wall.
-We all know to be careful of lightening, but we talked at length of how careful we need to be of the electricity within our homes.
-Next week we will be continuing to explore electrical concepts with circuits and will hopefully begin to play with some experiments involving electricity!

Collective Understandings 5-1 and 5-2: Students in both homerooms were challenged to make at least one math/science contribution to our collective understandings work. About half of the students in each class made a contribution. I have marked their contributions on Powerschool under 'Math'. The next contribution will be for April 25th and there will be some new slides that the kids can add to at that time. When I assess their contributions the next time I will assess it under the 'Science' marks. These contributions take about 5 minutes to make. One contributions is the expectations, but kids are encouraged to explore more concepts and see where they can find examples in their lives.

FRENCH 5-2 and 5-1
-We are still working on our French zoos! Check out our Grade 5 twitter for some in-progress pictures!
