Our first week back after Spring Break has sure been a busy one!
CTF
-Both 5-1 and 5-2 have begun brainstorming ideas for their Coulee Fest projects! They have been encouraged to revisit the drawing board, change their ideas, edit, narrow or expand focus, and more. Some students have moved on to their purple "Initial Planning" page and may be bringing it home for you to review. Please take the time to carefully look at their planning sheet to help assess their project. It needs to be signed and returned to school. By signing the page, you agree to support your student with this project in the upcoming weeks. Students (and teachers) are so excited!!
HUMS
-We are finishing True Blue Scouts this week (and a bit on Monday)! We will be moving on to our graphic novel creation assignment very soon. Ask your student what they thought about the story, if they liked/disliked the ending, and why! We will be starting our new read aloud soon!
-Confederation and NWMP Sum-up Pages were due today. Students were given time in class all week to finish them and were encouraged to take them home if they felt behind. They were also given time today. If students did not hand them in, they have been marked "late" on PowerSchool. However, if students can complete these on the weekend and hand them in Monday morning before classes start, the "late" will be removed from their grade.
-We are currently looking at Western immigration into Canada in the late 1800s/early 1900s, examining how the CPR played a major role in this, how the CPR was built, and who Canada wanted coming over (as well as who they didn't). We are also looking at the treatment of Chinese railway workers and the Indigenous Peoples of the Prairies and how they were impacted by the railway and Western immigration. For this, we are currently designing Western immigration propaganda posters and will be starting a 5-paragraph essay next week that revolved around the CPR.
-When we are done with the CPR and Western immigration topics, we will have a quiz that covers those topics as well as Confederation and the NWMP. A date has not yet been chosen for this quiz. It will be added to the blog and announced in class and on the class calendar once it has been chosen.
MATH
-We have continued to work on our understanding of common fractions and equivalent fractions in our world. Students are asked to see where they might see physical examples of fractions in their own homes. What might these fractions look like? How might you describe them and could you find an equivalent fractions to describe them?
-We will continue to be working on this and drawing examples of our fractions as well in the coming week.
SCIENCE
-We have started on Electricity and Magnetism! The kids are pretty excited about this. We have started with some basic understanding of magnetism and will be spending the coming week talking about currents, atoms, electrons and basic electrical terms.
HEALTH 5-2
-We have started designing a cumulative page about our well-being. In it, we are examining elements like physical activity, healthy choices, hygiene practices, hobbies, positive relationships, personal strengths, and potential career choices. This assignment consists of identifying personal choices in these areas and recording them in both pictures and words.
FRENCH 5-2
-In French, we recently watched a bit of the "Secret Life of Pets" in FRENCH! It was our job to listen to the French being spoken to see if we could identify at least 3 words that we know. Students did a great job and recorded French words that they heard and what they meant in English.
-We will be moving on to animals next week and designing our own ZOO! Watch out...an animal might just escape from their cage! We may need to put up "LOST" posters with a good description of the escaped animal!
FRENCH 5-1
-In French, 5-1 has been working on identifying their family tree members in French. This will take some time and might require a little bit of help figuring out family member names at home.
