REMINDERS
-Students are reminded that Feb 27th is Pink Shirt Day and we encourage everyone to wear a pink something to support us with working towards raising awareness about bullying in our schools, workplaces, and lives. There will be activities organized across the grades on Wednesday for students to participate in with their homerooms.
HUMS
-Remember that the Fur Trade Cafe will take place on Thursday next week! Make sure to bring your food and any serving utensils you may need. Leftover food and dishes will need to brought home that same afternoon please
-We have wrapped up our brief look at the United Empire Loyalists and will be moving into the Underground Railroad next week.
-We are over half way down "True Blue Scouts" and will soon be embarking on a journey to learn how to create graphic novel pages and we will use these new skills to turn "True Blue Scouts" into a graphic novel representation of the story!
-Students have also begun creating their own Canadian "folk tale" character in ELA. To accompany this, students are going to be writing a story in the format of a rhyming poem that tells the adventure of their character. We hope to have time to also create individual book covers for these folk tales as well.
MATH
-We have spent time this week on a new project with big numbers, lots of dividing, decimals, and percentages!
-We read the book "If the world were a village of 100 people" in class. This is a great read about what a global village would really look like and who/what/how it would be organized.
-we used the book as a jumping off point to actually look at what Canada look like if we were to reduce it to a village of 100 people.
-We took some time to introduced into the concept of the Census (Mrs. Simmons is excited as she LOVES the Census!)
-Using the data for the most recent census, in 2016,, we have begun to look at how we take that data and reduce it down so it is only out of 100 people.
-We then take that data and have been transferring it into bar graph so that we have a pictorial representation to help us explain our understanding.
-We have also used to census data from 1991 to do a comparative analysis to how each of the provinces has either grown or decreased in population during those 25 years.
-We have lots more to come and many more things to explore in this work!
SCIENCE
-We continued to have fun with looking at crystals (and various other things under our microscopes.
-In the coming weeks we will be looking and figuring out the differences between acids and bases as well as surface tensions, surfactants, and more! Lots to come!
