Week at a Glance

REMINDERS: Mrs. Simmons is still looking for two volunteers for Nov 29th and one volunteer for Nov 30th. Please, please, please let her know if you can go!

HUMS
We are continuing to work on our big task - our Canadian Physical Regions project. The due dates for our research and picture pages have come and gone. Please make sure these elements of the project have been completed and you have got a stamp in your pink and yellow booklets.

We are currently working on our paragraphs (some students are choosing to write essays) and that is being done in our green booklet and then typed on the computer. As a class, we have chosen due dates together. The paragraph for 5-1 and 5-2 is due Thursday, November 22nd.

We are continuing to have free writing time and have been experimenting with 25-word Stories. Students receive a picture prompt and must write a story about it in only 25 words! It has been well received and we are enjoying it.

The end of our read-aloud, Holes, is approaching! We don't want it to be over! It has been a great read and we have done reading responses as well as pictures about the story in our orange HUMS duotang. When we finish, we will be gearing up to watch the movie and create a comparison between the book and the movie as well as complete a small project about the book.

MATH 5-1 and 5-2
Students have continued to work on their understanding of arrays and partial product in multiplication this week. Kids have made leaps and bounds with their ability in partial product and have continued to demonstrate that they have a good understanding of how to build the questions and work towards finding the right answers. We have spent some time talking about estimating answers before we begin the computations and this continues to be critical for kids to work on.  Students have also been working on simple math word problems, as well as some more involved for problems. The goal throughout the week has been to underline and identify what the questions are asking us to do. We have also been working on identifying what mathematical process is necessary to try and solve the problem. This work will continue into next week.

SCIENCE 5-1 and 5-2

Students spent considerable time this week looking at and identifying clouds that are visible in our sky. Identifying the clouds and understanding what weather they can bring is an outcome for weather and one of the things we will be looking at when 5-1 visits Inglewood next week. Students have also been working on taking jot notes on various topics from www.weatherwhizkids.com. We will be continuing to look at how weather impacts our lives in Canada and work towards developing a deeper understanding throughout the coming weeks.

ART 5-2
We are moving into some artist studies! We recently completed our first art critique and have examined some of the works of Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian painter and art theorist, who creates abstract pieces often inspired by music. He is also known for using circles in a lot of his works. This week we listened to the same songs that inspired Kandinsky to paint Impression III - Concert (Schoenberg’s 1909 work, Three Piano Pieces) in order to create our own "Kandinsky Circles". We looked at how Kandinsky's work used to be less abstract (we could still make out the shapes and impressions of objects) but slowly changed into what he is known for today (synesthesia-like paintings that depict music as colours and shapes) .

Over the coming weeks we will be taking some time to look at various artists and their styles as well as have the opportunity to create our own works based on these artists.

FRENCH 5-2 and 5-1
We are taking a short break from working on our conversational French phrases to complete a project based around school words. This includes creating a blueprint of a school using the proper words for different places around the school as well as creating a class schedule, which will involve learning the subject names in French as well as how to tell time in French.
