Week at a Glance

Reminders: 5-1 is still looking for 1 field trip volunteer for the CPO field trip on November 21st. 5-2 is still looking for 3 volunteers for the Inglewood field trip on November 14th.

SCIENCE:
-Students finished up their work this week on their wetlands classification group posters.
-This was a tough challenge for many kids to figure out ways to work with their groups
-Many had leadership challenges and had to navigate through how they might solve their problems and move forward.
-We also watched a video today from the Dene Indigenous group on the role of water in their culture. This indigenous perspective on the role of the water cycle was very interesting and raised some good conversation in the class.
-To see the video we watched click here.
-We will be continuing to explore the indigenous perspective in the coming days.

MATH:
-students worked on using manipulatives to create multiplication arrays
-We also built arrays in groups and used graph paper to draw them out and support us.
-We have moved into Partial Product and will be working on this for a little while.
-We spent time talking about what it means to really multiply
-Students also talked about how 30 x 20 can really be seen as 3 x 2=6 (add the two zeros onto the end) so it equals 600.
-More excitement to come next week with continuing to work on partial product and then slowly moving into lattice multiplication.

HUMS:
-We have been working on our big Canadian Physical Regions task!
-Research was due at the start of the week (pink booklet) and students used this week to work on their visual picture page (yellow booklet has instructions). Remember, you need 2 pictures for each topic!
-Picture page is due Monday for 5-1 and Tuesday for 5-2. They will have time on Monday to work on this but were encouraged to take it home over the weekend.
-We also looked at how to write a proper paragraph this week and what makes a basic paragraph vs. a good paragraph vs. a great paragraph! Example sheets are posted in the classroom.
-Students are becoming experts about their specific region of Canada and will have a chance to teach others in the class all about it!
-We have been working on our handwriting skills and are getting close to being done the "rocking round" letters. We have improved so much since starting in October!
