Week at a Glance

Housekeeping:
-Remember we have a field trip on Monday! Please dress in layers so we can be prepared for warm or cool weather. Make sure to have a FULL lunch and water bottle with you.
-Makeup Quiz for Mapping: Wednesday, Oct. 24th in the morning at 8:00am (you can show up a bit earlier if you need to) in Mrs. Croswell's room.
-Odes are due, typed, on Wednesday, October 24th in Humanities.
-5-1 and 5-2 Science: Water cycles are due into Mrs. Simmons on Thursday, Oct 25th. Please remember to fully colour the picture and background. The definitions can be found on the Math/Science page on the blog.
-5-1 Desperately needs cardboard egg cartons! If you have some and can send them in we would be most grateful!

HUMS
We finished our first quiz this week! Everyone can breath - we did it! We have discussed some of the results of the quiz. To see your mark, please log into your Power School account and look at the "Map Quiz - Provinces, Territories, and Capital Cities" and "Map Quiz - Bodies of Water" assignments. If students would like to re-do their quiz (or part of quiz), they are welcome to a makeup quiz on Wednesday next week in the morning. The maps are still up on the Humanities page on the blog. Students who want to take the makeup quiz can use those maps to study on the weekend.

We have begun diving into learning about the physical regions of Canada! We are using the note taking strategies we learned earlier when we covered natural resources. We are practicing these skills while learning about all 6 regions in our country. After we have learned a little about each region, we will be starting our BIG PROJECT! We can't wait!

MATH
Students continued to work on their understanding of addition and subtraction throughout the week. They specifically worked on their ability to regroup from lower place values into higher place values when adding and regrouping from higher place values back into lower place values with subtraction. This has proven challenging for many students and they were supported with this by having the opportunity to work on their understanding with some computational questions. They had the opportunity to work on these by themselves or with peers.

We continued to work on our understanding of addition and subtraction by incorporating decimals into our work. We discussed the different place values and the role of regrouping when using numbers with a value of less than one. Students also completed a computational worksheet on this to help them further develop their automaticity with this work.

We worked on the Icarus problem and will begin to tackle the Daedalus problem on Tuesday. This one also promises to be challenging and kids should have as much fun with the Daedalus problem as they did with the Icarus problem! Problems such as they are helping us to further develop our mental math, specifically as it relates to multiplying by 3 and dividing by 2. The Daedalus problem will also help us to further develop our automaticity with these basic facts.

SCIENCE
In science we have been focusing on the different types of wetlands that can be found in Canada. These specific types are different than other places in the world as Canada has a unique Canadian Wetlands Classification System. By developing a better understanding of fens, bogs, marshes, swamps and ponds, we can develop a better understanding of the places around us. Students worked to create a journal page that documented some of the key information about each of these places and a quick sketch of what each type might look like.

Students also worked this week on developing a better understanding of the water cycle. Understanding the importance of the water cycle and the impact on our planet is a key part of our work in science this term. Understanding how critical each stage is and how we can make an impact on the water cycle is key for each student and something we will be continuing to work on throughout the coming week. Students are reminded that their water cycle is due on Thursday, Oct 25th but they will not get any more time to work on it in class. Definitions can be found on the Math/Science Page.
