HUMS
In Humanities, we have been exploring the map of Canada as well as the natural resources our country has to offer. We will be looking more deeply at resources as we move into our large task on regions. For natural resources, we spent time looking at the types (renewable and non-renewable) as well as what they are and what they can be used for. Students are also encouraged to try to think more deeply on the subject by considering how to responsibly use non-renewable resources and where the things around us come from. They are also encouraged to try to make connections to their life and the world around them.

We are continuing our read-aloud of Holes and are about half way through. The action in the book is amping up and we are working on illustrating a piece of the story along with our reading responses.

**Remember to study for your Map Quiz that is coming up on Thursday. Use the "Humanities" page at the top of the blog to see the maps and what is required.**

MATH
Students have been working on revisiting their understandings of addition and subtraction this week. We also looked at a 4 Star problem surrounding the recent snowfall in Calgary that broke previous records. This was a challenging problem and one that has highlighted the need for some intentional work in classes looking at how to break down problems to fully ensure that we are answering questions with all the necessary information. This is a ongoing task and one that we will be looking at throughout the year. In the coming week we will be continuing to look at more of our basic facts as well as several more problem based challenges.

SCIENCE
Both homerooms have been devoted to continuing their climate based research throughout the beginning of the week. Students quickly took to the task of beginning their letters to the Prime Minister as environmental advisors. These letters might still need some work over the weekend. Students have had a fair bit of time throughout the week to work on this and I have asked for the letter to be completed by Tuesday, Oct 16th. They have all been writing their letters on Google Drive and can easily access them from home. If a student needs more time please email Mrs. Simmons (sesimmons@cbe.ab.ca) to discuss a later hand in date. Students have been asked to ensure that they share their letter on Google Drive with Mrs. Simmons(sesimmons@educbe.ca) as well but please do not email anything to that account as it won't deliver correctly. Many of the letters are beautiful and we can start discussing who might want to send their letter on to PM Trudeau. In the coming week we will be going back to discuss some of the different types of wetlands in Canada in preparation for upcoming field trips.

ART
We are continuing to work on our Fall pumpkin zentangles! We are experimenting with making flat shapes appear as 3D forms using shape, line, and colour.
In 5-1 we have also been working on getting our pumpkin zentangles ready for painting. we took a slightly different approach and focused on the exteriors of our pumpkins. We will be moving onto painting next week.

FRENCH
5-2 We are continuing to work on numbers, colours, and practicing speaking French out loud! Students in 5-2 are encouraged to work on their numbers 0-10 over the weekend.
Students in 5-1 continued to work on their numbers as well as the colours in French over the duration of the week. No homework was assigned for 5-1.
