-5-1 has a blue take-home question for HUMS to complete and have signed by a parent/guardian over the weekend. Please return on Monday.
HUMS
We have been continuing our work with identity and exploring the question “How Do I Impact Environments and How Do Environments Impact Me?” which we will be getting into greater detail in October with a segue into the mapping of Canada.
We have also started our first read-aloud in class with the book Holes by Louis Sacher. We have been completing reading responses after each session of reading that focus on making connections to the story, digging into personal opinions of situations in the book, and enhancing comprehension in general.
Students are also currently working on writing an ode to an object/person/thing that they enjoy or care about and will create a pastel “stained-glass” art piece to go with them.
Throughout the week we have been continuing to work on building a stronger understanding of place value. we did through some games and challenges. Students are encouraged to use dice and cards at home to build large numbers and then work on identifying what the value of each numeral is depending on the place value. For example: when building a number such as 546 973 getting the students to identify that nine digits is actually in the hundreds place value and there for is worth 900. It’s a great skill for the kids to continue building on as we continue in math.
I know some of the parents have been asking for some websites that they can use with their kids for extra support. I like to use the website https://www.mathsisfun.com/ if the kids are confused about anything as it does a great job defining terms and explaining it in a way that makes sense to the kids.
In the coming week in math we will be continuing to look at big numbers and exploring those in a multitude of ways including games, practices and literature. We will be starting on a larger project that will be looking at some of the information from the 2016 Census. More information to come!
Science:
We have continued to look at weather and wetlands in science throughout the week. We spent some time talking about climate change and some of the ways we can contribute to making the world a better place. Reducing our garbage, reusing materials, recycling, and composting are all ways that the kids can make a difference in our carbon footprint on the planet. We spent some time talking about the importance of wetlands with flood mitigation in Alberta and watched a video from YYCCares called ‘The Drain Game’. This video discussed how critical the role of wetlands is in managing flood waters in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. We had a good discussion with the students and will be returning to discuss some more of this in the coming weeks. 5-1 Might be taking a walking tour up to one of the local wetlands in Tuscany next week when 5-2 is at Open Minds. Information for parents will come home in an email. In the coming week, we will be continuing to look at the role of wetlands in our world, how weather affects us and has an impact on our lives, and what is happening with both of these subjects in current events.
