Week at a Glance

HUMS
Book buffet books should be finished today!! If you aren't done reading, please finish this weekend. We are starting our project next week (if you haven't already) so bringing your materials to school is important! Please come prepared next week with what you need to work on your final project at school in class. Thank you!

We have finished going through the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, as well as creating our own Charter for TMC, and have moved on to looking at the topic of Quebec Separatism. We reviewed reasons for the referendums of 1980 and 1995. We are now applying it to our own lives and asking "What if Western Canada decided to separate from Eastern Canada? Would you vote yes or no - why?" Students have chosen a side and are creating a propaganda poster in order to sway others to their side!

MATH and SCIENCE

-Students continued to work on their backyard projects. Almost everyone has finished their area/perimeter sums, completed a good copy of their backyard, and completed their garden box layout.
-The students were challenged to grow a variety of vegetables to offset the cost of their groceries throughout the year.
-While they had to include a variety of vegetables worth different sums of money, may students proved that they could see the link between the vegetables that they were growing and the offset costs.
-Each plan also took up a specific fraction of the garden box and students had to puzzle through how many different plants could be accommodated in each box.
-This work was challenged and it was great to see the different garden that were planted and how much each family earned to offset their grocery bills!
-At this point we decided to challenge the kids to add some electrical features to their gardens as well.
-Each student was challenged to create both a series and parallel circuit watering and lighting system for their backyard.
-Once they had planned it all out on paper, students went back into PHET labs to build their prototypes.
-We also spent some time playing with circuits to ensure that we could create series and parallel circuits with our hands on materials. Much fun was had!
