Week(s) at a Glance

Thank you so much for coming to conferences, seeing all the hard work your students have put into the last three months, and taking the time to chat with us!

HUMS
We are hard at work finishing up our Canadian Physical Regions task! We are currently on our creative writing piece (blue booklet) or have recently finished this. 5-1 will be working on the creative writing pieces next week as they were away at Open Minds last week. 5-2 should prepare to be working on their artifacts (purple booklet). Make sure to bring any building materials you need for your artifact early next week!

We have also finished reading Holes and have watched the movie! We talked about the differences and similarities and created a Venn Diagram to display them. Next week we will begin working on our Holes Choice Board activity. Students have a choice between 12 different options for their final project. Some of these are written pieces, presentation-based pieces, and creative pieces (see below)! Students are welcome to choose whichever option they like best.

We are shortly moving onto our next read aloud: The True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp. Our project for this will be re-creating the story as pages from a graphic novel! Please don't read the novel ahead of time as it would be great if we could experience it together as a class!

ART 5-2
Last week we were able to conduct multiple artist studies! We looked at Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, and Gustav Klimt. Previously we had explored the works of Wassily Kandinsky and James Rizzi. Students were able to create their own pieces in the styles of these artists as well as learn some history on each artist and what made their individual styles unique. We used acrylic paints, watercolours, and paper cut -outs in our creations. We will be conducting more artist studies as the year goes on!

SCIENCE: Students revisited their wetlands poster before conferences to ensure that they had identified the abiotic/biotic features of their wetlands. We talked about interactions between plants and animals in their wetlands and we worked on teasing some of those out.

We also talked about some of the weather features that we will be looking at in the coming weeks. Students will be continuing to build upon their weather understanding through a 'Meteorologist for a Day' as well as other work. This work will help students to further develop their understanding of how weather can have an impact on the world that they live in.

MATH: We continued our work with multiplication this week and explored lattice multiplication. This is a fun and inventive way to multiply and it often makes a lot of sense for kids. We worked on that and will be continuing on this in the coming weeks as we also will be exploring some more traditional methods of multiplication. We will also be working on some more challenging problems in the coming weeks. We will be starting division in the new year!
